Reported to be the oldest desert on earth, the Namib is approximately 80 million years old. Completely devoid of surface water, it is bisected by several dry riverbeds and is characterised by extensive, undulating dunes. The Sahara may be larger and Gobi more isolated, but the Namib is the very oldest, so on this trip, prepare for the best desert experience possible!
This epic adventure takes place in an area previously known as “Diamond Area No. 2” – an area where diamond mining started in the early 1900’s. Crossing the southern dune field from south to north includes many highlights. We’ll visit the rocky outcrop called Sylvia Hill, take on water at Meob Bay before passing through more famous landmarks such as Conception Bay and Sandwich Harbour. In between these deserted beaches we’ll experience the ghostly atmosphere of three deserted mining camps namely, Charlotten, Grillenberger and Holsatia. Other attractions, slowly being swallowed by the sand, are a truck called Suzy, an ox-wagon fitted with “sand tyres” and a shipwreck called the Eduard Bohlen…
Although almost no facilities are available in the dunes, your guides will ensure that you enjoy three delicious meals daily and a hot water shower in the evenings. Sleeping deep in the dunes under the magnificent southern skies will be an experience that will linger in the memories for years to come…
The reed-fringed lagoon at Sandwich Harbour, situated 48km south of Walvis Bay at the foot of towering ivory-coloured dunes, is a spectacular and sought-after destination. The lagoon referred to in old texts as Sandfisch Haven, was once an open bay, which became silted up over the years. Today it is visited especially by anglers, ornithologists, photographers and nature lovers (The lagoon is one of five protected wetlands in Namibia). The lagoon is fed by fresh water seeping from an inland aquifer, and is a sanctuary for large numbers of coastal and freshwater birds.
Tours to this area are done on a tailor-made basis and it is recommended that two nights are spent in the Dunes.
